In which this story makes me a little bit hungry (so what's new, right?)
The Stolen Smell (Peru)
A long time ago there lived a baker who made the best bread in the
town.
But although everyone loved his baking, the baker was greedy and
stingy. He was so stingy that he wouldn’t even give leftover breadcrumbs
to the birds!
One day, a poor traveler sat outside the bakery. He did not have
ten coins to buy bread, so he stayed out on the street, inhaling deeply, and
enjoying the wonderful smell.
The baker saw him there, enjoying the smell of the bread, and the sight
made him angry.
“How dare this stranger enjoy the good smell of my bread for
free.”
He marched out into the street and handed the poor traveler a bill for
the bread.
“What is this bill for?” asked the traveler. “I did not buy your
bread!”
“Exactly,” said the greedy baker. “You enjoy the odor of my bread,
you must pay for that enjoyment.”
They took their dispute to the respected town judge.
Of course, everyone expected the case to be dismissed as ridiculous, but
the judge was very serious as he asked questions.
The first question was for the traveler. “Is it true that you
enjoyed the smell of the bread without buying any?”
The traveler admitted this.
“Then,” said the judge, “here is my ruling: since you enjoyed the
smell of the bread, you must pay for it. How many coins do you have?”
The traveler had only three coins.
“Give me the three coins,” said the judge.
The traveler had no choice. He gave his last three coins to the
judge.
The judge cupped the coins between his hands and jingled them
together. Then he looked at the baker.
“Do you hear the coins jingle?”
“I do,” said the baker. “Give them to me now!”
But the judge stopped the baker. “Wait! You have received
your payment. The man was guilty of stealing the smell of your
bread. You have been paid with the sound of the coins.
“Case dismissed.”
