In which we walk into the light (finally) and find a poem there

I would cheerfully trade all the Christmas holidays I have left for about 3 dozen extra Hallowe'ens and a Thanksgiving or two.

But I would never give away Solstice!

The Swampland sun rose this morning at 7:55. At Haiku Farm, it clears the eastern mountains and shines down on us around 8:40 am. Sunset this evening is 4:20, it will be completely dark by 4:45.

Tomorrow, we get an extra 60 seconds of light!

Here's a poem that I really like, by Oliver Herford.

I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.

"We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,"
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.

  1. Me too! I have a print out of the sunrise and sunset times from Nov-Mar and anxiously count the extra minutes of daylight each day after solstice.
Now, daylight savings time, thats one that should really be a holiday:)

  2. Hifive, solstice buddy! I love the mountains here, but they sure do block the sun and eat up more of my precious winter daylight. But it's all good now!
