The Fish That Was The Moon (Australia)
In the time known as Dreamtime, the ancestors dreamed, and from their dreams,
they created everything there is in this world.
In the Dreamtime, every creation could transform into another,
so that a wattle tree could become a water lily, the emu could become an egret,
a desert could become a man or a woman.
they created everything there is in this world.
In the Dreamtime, every creation could transform into another,
so that a wattle tree could become a water lily, the emu could become an egret,
a desert could become a man or a woman.
The people tell some of the stories, like the story of the two sisters who one day swam across a channel that divided their land from an island. The day was beautiful.
"I'd like to stay here for a long time," one of the sisters said.
"Nothing to do but enjoy all that is here to enjoy. Nobody to bother us."
"Nothing to do but enjoy all that is here to enjoy. Nobody to bother us."
"Don't be silly," her sister said. "We couldn't stay. What would we eat?"
The first woman sat up and pointed into the water.
"Fish," she said, and right then a large silver fish leaped out of the water and back in again.
The woman aimed her spear, and when the fish reappeared, she pierced him.

The woman aimed her spear, and when the fish reappeared, she pierced him.
Her sister jumped into the water, and together the girls caught the fish in their hands
and tossed him to shore.
and tossed him to shore.
Then they built a fire on the beach, and placed the fish to cook upon the fire.
"Ah, what a wonderful smell," they sighed. "But let us go dig roots to eat with our meal."
When they returned, their bags filled with vegetables and berries,
they were shocked to see the fish was no longer on the fire.
They saw the fish, to their amazement, climbing a tree,
and it climbed so quickly, they knew they would never catch it.

and it climbed so quickly, they knew they would never catch it.
"Never mind," said the woman who had speared him.
"When it reaches the narrow branches at the top of the tree, it will fall."
"When it reaches the narrow branches at the top of the tree, it will fall."
And so they sat at the foot of the tree and watched as the fish climbed and climbed.
But it never fell. When it reached the very top, it floated up into the dark sky.
The fish had swelled until it was round, and for hours they watched it
as it drifted across the sky and finally sank behind the hills.

The next night, they couldn't wait to see if the fish would reappear in the sky.
They lay down by the fire, and when the sun went down,
they saw a light at the edge of the eastern sky.
Slowly the light rose, climbing into the sky,
but now the fish was not quite so round as it had been the night before.
A part of it seemed slightly flatter.

Each night they waited and watched,
and each night the fish climbed out of the eastern sky and journeyed west.
Each night it was smaller than the night before, until one night it was only a sliver of light.

Each night it was smaller than the night before, until one night it was only a sliver of light.
The next night it vanished altogether.
The sky black as ink, the sisters shivered.
"I want to leave," said the first sister, and the next morning they swam back home.
"I want to leave," said the first sister, and the next morning they swam back home.
Several nights later, the fish appeared once again in the sky.
Again it rose large and round, and again the next night it was slightly flatter,
and ever since then the fish moon makes this journey,
and every month it disappears for just a while.

and every month it disappears for just a while.
And so it is that the fish became the moon. This was in Dreamtime.
